Awareness of creative subject options at GCSE

Purpose

Traditionally uptake of creative subjects at GCSE has been low. Increasing awareness of not just the subject but the potential career pathways and earnings is key for both year 8 students and their parents.

How did you do it?

Over 3 lessons we introduced option subjects in Art, Photography and Fashion & Textiles. We showed videos & provided careers literature for students to take home to undertake further research and discuss with their parents / carers. We connected with alumni who took these subjects at GSCE and beyond, and at the Year 8 parents options evening we provided further information about creative career pathways.

Challenges and solutions

Many parents don’t see the value in creative subjects. Changing their mindset and showing them that careers in photography, art or fashion can be really rewarding not just in personal terms but also in financial.

Results

We have seen an increase in uptake at GSCE for these subjects and have more than doubled the number of classes we were offering 5 years ago.

We are now looking to do the same for Year 11’s considering their A levels.
